Dream Big. Work Backwards.

My personal journey of letting go, reprioritizing, focusing, and realizing a dream.

Many people over the past months have reached out to check in and reconnect, given I have been quiet over the past couple of years. Questions are: Am I OK? Am I still coaching, or leadership development work? The short answer is YES, absolutely. The long answer is: Then what have I been up to? I have been working on several big impact projects, both personally and professionally, sprinkled in with events that have derailed me a bit from being visible on social media. These projects and events have been consuming and rewarding, while also stressful, and tiring at times. Sometimes in life it is important to dream big, but then work backwards in order to get super focused. What may feel like working backwards, and slowing down, is a necessity to get clear on priorities the micro-steps to make them happen. This strategy has enabled me to accomplish the “big rock” goals that have a long-term impact personally, and professionally.  As hard as it was, I chose to set aside some of my writing, visibility, and connection with my cherished community and network so I could focus on the dreams I wanted to realize, while also allowing for unexpected events, I believe that the forced slow down of tearing my ACL this year was a metaphor for going backwards, and a catalyst for reprioritizing, letting go, and focusing, one day at a time on goals that seemed unattainable. Even with the forced slow down, it has been amazing in what I have been able to accomplish, personally and professionally. It is about finding power and choice in the present moment to focus, take action, rebuild, that creates momentum and tangible, sustainable results.

Here are some questions that I asked myself when slowing down:

  • What is my dream? What is it that I truly want that thought you couldn’t have?
  • Are the actions that I am taking based on what I still want, or value?
  • What areas of your life that need to be changed or strengthened, personally or professionally?
  • What cycles or patterns do I need to break, or reconfigure?
  • What beliefs about myself and worthiness are limiting me from taking action to realize a dream?
  • Can I trust myself and believe that I can make it happen?
  • What do I self-sabotage if I do not follow through on my daily commitments?
  • What parts of my mindset need to be reconfigured energetically?
  • Where do I feel drained, and where do you feel energized?
  • What do I need to let go of to make this happen?

Taking the time to course correct and contemplate what I wanted helped me to realize the dream. The enormity of what I have accomplished and have moved through literally and figuratively is a bit mind boggling, but the focus and the intentional choice to reprioritize and let go of certain things, has enabled my husband and I to move to Hood River, Oregon and build a new community, life, and custom home, fulfilling a dream of  living on land surrounded by nature. I also completed a two-year contract with GitHub developing and launching a coaching program for engineering managers, as well as continuing leadership coaching for companies helping leaders to develop human-centric leadership capabilities that bring consciousness into work. Each of these goals helped to support the other to make it all happen, it was like a puzzle piece that all fit and worked together, but that took focus and going quiet in some areas of my life to make it all happen. It felt like exfoliating, and exploring at the same time.

I have met and worked with some amazing people along the way, and fostered relationships that I will have for a very long time to come. The support and partnerships have been amazing, and I am grateful for the collaborations that enabled these dreams to come true. From having a vision, to conversations around the dream, to believing that it was possible, and then refocusing to take the right actions to take each day, these goals have come to fruition. Most importantly, these dreams did not happen without self care, asking for support, meditation, reflection, discipline and rituals to stay grounded and centered through the process.

So what will I focus on now? I am continuing my coaching and mission to help develop purpose driven cultures, conscious leaders. I am also coming back to finishing a book that I started before the pandemic but with a fresh lens that incorporates the learnings and growth of who I am now. The great news is that falling back (literally tearing my ACL) has provided more wisdom and tools based on my own learnings and study of neuroscience and how to continue to stay grounded, develop more resilience, through these experiences over the past couple of years. The ReSoul Revolution is a workbook focused on the HOW to develop a resident mindset (ReSouling and then ReSurging). The book provides the mindset and tools to take “micro-steps” creating the discipline and rituals that transform and reprogram the brain in order to live the life you desire. Stay tuned!

Life is an evolution, and in order to create your own revolution of a cycle, slow down and go within to reflect on a dream. Creating a process for rebuilding whether physical therapy for my ACL, or building a solid and thoughtful  foundation for a new home, or job, or life dream, ask yourself what you truly desire, HOW do you want to live this life, and what do you value now. What needs to be let go of, and what steps each day are necessary to realize a goal, or a dream. This does not happen overnight,  it takes time and patience for a sustainable future. But with focus, and micro-steps each day, it is amazing what you can accomplish. So that’s where I am. I would love to reconnect, or meet new people to partner with, coach, and work with in order to collectively create a positive impact in the world through conscious leadership. I would love to hear from you and together, let’s dream big, and work backwards to get there together. www.facetscoaching.com
